Market Hall Art Raffle
Unique
Market Hall "before" image captured in oil by candlelight
It's not every visual artist who would take up the challenge to paint a live performance, in real time and in the relative dark of a theatre. But that's exactly what renowned local artist John Climenhage did last October at the Market Hall. The result is magnificent and it will be on display at The Blue Tomato Art Shop beginning April 1.
"When John approached us about painting the Hall as a fundraising idea we were thrilled' says development director for Market Hall Performing Arts, Karen August. "We thought it would be rather fun to capture the interior as it had been for the last 26 years. With the exception of a brand new entrance at the South end of the building, all of the dramatic improvements will be seen inside the building with the retrofit of a new theatre, lobby and elevators. It's really the 'before' of the before and after makeover, so it is a unique piece."
Using only the ambient light of the performance and a candle in a hurricane lamp, Climenhage positioned himself in the upper corner of the theatre, near the sound booth, for a panoramic view of the cabaret and the audience. The result is a boldly impressionistic work depicting the burlesque glamour of "Max's 10th Anniversary Cabaret."
John Climenhage has been painting, teaching and exhibiting throughout Canada and the U.S. since 1989. He apprenticed in Victoria with acclaimed oil painter Jim Gordaneer from 1994-1999. He has a vast knowledge of art history which he references in both his landscapes and abstract works. His paintings incorporate theories of quantum physics and existential philosophies in a two dimensional field upon which the painting occurs as an event.
The completed artwork, a 19" x 16" oil on board, is being raffled (along with two other items) as a fundraiser for Market Hall Performing Arts as they raise money for the new sound, lighting, seats and stage for the performance space. With all of the government funding for the project secured this will contribute to the community fundraising for the centre.
