He Left Home by Tadeusz Różewicz
presented by Cultural Studies, Trent University

Tuesday Mar 13, 2012 8:00pm

Translated by Adam Czerniawski
Directed by Diana Manole

He Left Home by renowned and award-winning Polish author Tadeusz Różewicz is produced and performed by a group of extremely talented Trent University students under the direction of Professor Diana Manole, a professional director and playwright. Written during communism, He Left Home disguises its political message in a postmodern mixture of realism, poetry, dance, and ironic allusions to the Odyssey, Hamlet, and Becket’s Waiting for Godot. It tells the story of a middle-aged man who slips on a banana peel and forgets who he is, but feels fully content. Despite his protests, his wife forces him to regain his memory and get back to the miserable life he had before the accident. Suggesting the cultural and political context the play originally belonged to, the Cultural Studies production reveals a dictatorial society where people are constantly watched by the secret police and lose the right to happiness. The absurdist tragicomedy stirs laughter but also warns that if we aren’t careful something similar might happen to us!

“He is not happy. And if he is, we must immediately make him aware of the tragic situation in which he finds himself. Don't you see that he can't be happy? He is an adult, not a hick or a poet.” (Tadeusz Różewicz)

Scott Driscoll & The Heartland Levy
presented by Scott Driscoll Music

Saturday Mar 17, 2012 8:00pm

Since the release of No Regrets in 2010 Scott has received an internet Songwriter of the Year award and he’s been working hard promoting the music from his debut CD. If you were raised in Peterborough and know the Driscoll family you’ll know it’s been over 25 years since Scott performed locally with notable musicians like Steve Driscoll, Robert Phillips, Peter Brown, Steve Lynch.

The Heartland Levy’s influences include; Tom Petty, Blue Rodeo, John Mellencamp, The Eagles and the likes of Bruce Springsteen. Their focus on heartland style rock, from which the band’s name is derived, is apparent with straightforward music and songs that have a conviction to connect beyond just entertainment.

No Regrets was recorded right here in Peterborough at Haggaty Sound Studio, and is available through iTunes & Moondance Records. The single “Two Hearts” is playing on radio all across Canada. Special thanks for their support locally go out to our friends at Canoe FM in Haliburton who play many songs from the debut CD No Regrets in their regular programming.

1964 Peterborough. Orson sets eyes on Catherine for the first time. They are wed within the month. "In sickness and in health..." 2011 Peterborough. As Orson and Roberta recount the loves of their lives, they try to discover a truth about themselves within their relationships.

With the generous support of the Ontario Trillium Foundation, Ontario Arts Council, Canada Council and the City of Peterborough -- Mysterious Entity workshopped Beside Herself in 2011. THE ONCE
presented by Folk Under the Clock

Saturday Apr 21, 2012 8:00pm

Formed in 2004, in the centuries old fishing community of Trinity, Newfoundland, The Once are now a critically acclaimed trio.

Since its release in 2009, their self-titled debut album has resulted in two Canadian Folk Music Awards, four Music Newfoundland and Labrador Awards, an East Coast Music Award and a Galaxy Rising Star Award. The Once have quickly become the pride of Newfoundland and Labrador's folk music scene. Their latest CD, Row Upon Row Of People They Know (released Oct. 2011) represents a crossroads in the bands creative process. All are fond of traditional Newfoundland music, but the quiet and moving songs they sing are miles away from the rowdy drinking songs and shanties that often represent the Island's music.

The Once gets 3 of 4 stars in The Globe and Mail,.. " the drinkable Geraldine Hollett is the pure-voiced starlet" ....

Don't miss this wonderful trio..the talk of Canada's folk scene and a fitting group to close out our 25th season !

An Evening with Ottmar Liebert & Luna Negro
presented by Cuntrera Productions

Wednesday Apr 25, 2012 8:00pm

Liebert’s incredible global success on a musical level often seems like a simple outgrowth of his cultural background and powerful wanderlust in his formative years. Born in Cologne, Germany to Chinese-German father and Hungarian mother, he began playing guitar at 11, and traveled extensively through Europe and Asia intent on fully absorbing each musical tradition he encountered. After pursuing his Rock and Roll dreams first in his native Germany and then in Boston, he abandoned the frustrations of the East coast and settled in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Dragons Gold: Tellers Jan Andrews, Jennifer Cayley and Katherine Grier
presented by 2wp

Thursday Apr 26, 2012 7:30pm

When the old Norse gods held sway, a son was slain and payment exacted in gold, but the gold bore a curse, blighting the lives of all it touched. Wagner shaped the story anew, Tolkien made it the heart of a hobbit’s quest. Now, three of Canada’s finest tellers capture the epic’s spell once again. And, yes, there is a dragon; there is a sword that must be re-made.
