A Tribute to Ettapresented by St. Michael's Parish
Saturday Jun 29, 2013 8:00pm
A GEORGETTE FRY TRIBUTE TO ETTA JAMES
Award-winning Canadian singer/songwriter Georgette Fry is taking the music of Etta James across southern Ontario in June. At performances booked in Picton (June 8), Kingston (June 20), Brockville (June 22) and Peterborough (June 29), Fry – along with three backup singers, eight musicians and Shout Sister choruses – will be performing a diverse mix of songs made famous by the legendary American singer.
“We will draw a little from each of the genres in which Etta James was so capable – blues, jazz, gospel, rock – and we’ll be going beyond her biggest hits,” says Fry. “It’s really a retrospective – presenting numbers from different stages in her career.”
Fry explains that “from the time Etta James emerged as a singer in the 1960s, I was so impressed by her voice, by her ability to perform music from different genres, and to create very personal interpretations of songs written or performed by others. She was one of the biggest influences on my own development as a singer – my voice, phrasing, delivery. I think people will be surprised to hear how much she has influenced me.”
Considered one of the most dynamic jazz, gospel and rhythm and blues singers of all time, Etta James’ 50-year career was punctuated by hits such as “I’d Rather Go Blind”, “At Last”, “All I Could Do Was Cry” and “In the Basement” as well as multiple highly-acclaimed albums. She won three Grammy Awards: Etta James (1973), Let’s Roll (2003) and Blues to the Bone (2004). Etta James appeared at the opening ceremonies of the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993. She passed away in January of 2012.
Long recognized as one of Canada’s best female blues or rock vocalists, Georgette Fry was named "2013 Singer of the Year" by the Calgary Blues Music Association. She is a consistent nominee for the Maple Blues Awards, and has been chosen “Best Canadian Blues Vocalist (Female)” four times, as well as winning both the “Best Blues Songwriter” and “Best Blues Release of 2002, Female Artist” awards. She is also a Juno nominee for “Best Blues/Gospel Album” (1995)
Since 1995, Georgette Fry has released four jazz and blues albums, several of which include her own tracks. Through Shout Sister, she has encouraged hundreds of women to find their own voice and conducts more than 20 performances of these community-based groups each year.
"With her luscious singing voice, she explores the soulful grey area between blues and jazz, where artists like Etta James and Ray Charles and Bonnie Raitt have staked their careers." - Sandy MacDonald, Halifax Daily News

DAVID FRANCEY in concertpresented by FOLK UNDER THE CLOCK
Saturday Sep 28, 2013 8:00pm
His first album Torn Screen Door came out in 1999 and was a hit in Canada. Since then, he has released ten albums, won three Juno Awards and has had his songs covered by such artists as The Del McCoury Band, The Rankin Family, James Keelaghan and Tracy Grammer.
Laker Music is pleased to announce the April 30th, 2013 International release of David Francey’s new album 'So Say We All'. This will be the 10th album for three-time Juno Award winner.
Fourteen years ago at the age of 45, Francey began an astonishing journey from manual labourer to award-winning folk troubadour – renowned for writing with heart-wrenching honesty about the struggles of the poor and working class. His new album reflects his own journey through a period of struggle.
“The lesson learned,” he says, “was to celebrate every day spent on this side of the soil and to keep marching no matter what comes our way.”
That spirit of perseverance bursts from each song on the album, from the opening track “Rain” about the failure and rebirth of love to the bittersweet hymn “So Say We All.” Capturing the dark times (“Pandora’s Box,” “Ordinary Man”) as well as life’s shining moments (“Satellite,” “Blue Skies”), the album is a perfect acoustic showcase of what makes Francey’s songwriting so special. Poetic and fearless, Francey draws from his own experiences, delving into his recent depression (“Harm”) and singing about his colorful experiences on the road (“Cheap Motel”).
These remarkable songs are brought to life by Francey’s first-rate touring band – guitarist Mark Westberg, guitarist/banjo-picker Chris Coole and celebrated Maritime multi-instrumentalist Darren McMullen.
Beautifully spare and full of instant classics, 'So Say We All' is sure to be a favorite with folk fans of every generation.
In support of his new album, David Francey will be touring Canada and United States throughout 2013 and 2014. For his full schedule, please visit

Lee Harvey Osmondpresented by KawarthNow.com
Thursday Nov 14, 2013 8:00pm
Tom Wilson with his band Lee Harvey Osmond Nov 14th 8 p.m.
Presented by kawarthaNOW.com – Join us for an entertaining evening as Tom Wilson, his band Lee Harvey Osmond and special guests return to acid-folk-rock the Market Hall. Returning to the Market Hall with Lee Harvey Osmond, Tom Wilson and B&RK fans know that this is always an entertaining and not-to-be-missed fun show. Their current Canadian tour features their second critically acc;aomed CD “FOLK SINNER”. This concert will feature a stellar Canadian music line-up that will make you a Tom Wilson and Lee Harvey Osmond fan for life!
Tom Wilson (guitar and vocals) struck Canadian rock gold in the ’90s as the leader of the much-loved Junkhouse, and then found a whole new audience as a crucial component of roots-rock super-group Blackie and the Rodeo Kings, who have enjoyed recent success with their album KINGS and QUEENS, a collaboration with some of the finest female artists in the field of Americana and Roots Music. Wilson released solo albums in 2001 and 2006, and his 2005 collaboration with Bob Lanois, The Shack Recordings, was critically acclaimed.
"A Quiet Evil" was LeE HARVeY OsMOND's debut album, hatched when Latent Recordings owner/producer Michael Timmins and Tom Wilson (LHO) conspired to create the birth of "Acid Folk". The band performed at the Market Hall in 2009 on that album tour.
The album was critically rewarded and placed on the Polaris Prize long list.
"The Folk Sinner" is the logical progression, produced once again by Michael Timmins and joined by a fantastic group of guests, including Margot Timmins, Hawksley Workman, Colin Linden, Oh Suzanna, Andy Maize, and Paul Reddick, to name a few.

On the heals of two back to back sold out performances of The Last Waltz Celebrations. Bill and Jerome Avis are proud to return to Market Hall with an All-Star concert celebrating the music of their friend and his music LEVON HELM. It has been one year since we lost sweet Lee, but his spirit and loving soul lives on through his timeless songs and unique groove.
This night we will play the music that Levon made famous with The Band and Bob Dylan. Also we will play music from his solo outings with the RCO All Stars and from his Grammy winnings CD's: Dirt Farmer, and Electric Dirt, amongst others. Lead by our musical director, Juno award winning producer Lance Anderson, we have assembled some of Canada's and America's finest players. Our drummer Jerome Avis is Levon's Godson. His dad, Bill Avis was the Band's/Hawk's road manager for most of their career. This will be a special night for both as we honour the man, their friend and his music, with stories, favorite sayings and memories. But mostly with music. A nine piece band featuring Johnny Max, The Weber Brothers, Chris Partland, Rick Fines and Dave Mowat will perform on this memorable night.
Part of the shows proceeds will be going to Levon Helm's "Keep it Goin" fund. To continue his legacy and create a musical landmark at his Woodstock, NY. Home studio.
