About mysterious entity

mysterious entity is a company of Peterborough-based theatre artists. We are committed to developing new, high-quality theatre works that forge meaningful links with diverse community constituencies, and to staging thoughtful interpretations of classic and contemporary texts. Process and product reflect the company's priorities:

  • To stage high-quality artistic work
  • To deliver work with an inherent social conscience

mysterious entity, led by artistic director Em Glasspool, is an artist-driven company incorporating a small ensemble cast and an intensive rehearsal process in order to realize our artistic vision.

2008 marks the launch of our first year-round annual season, which includes two full productions (an original work, and a well-known theatre work) and the development of a new piece (slated for production in the following season).  We have been able to achieve this goal with the help of Ontario Trillium Foundation funding received in collaboration with the Market Hall Performing Arts Centre. The OTF funding is targeted for the development of an artistic residency program at the Market Hall (to date the Hall has functioned primarily as a rental space, booking arts groups but also presentations, social events, etc.). mysterious entity is the Market Hall’s first company in residence for an 18-month period, beginning January 4th, 2008.  OTF funds have allowed mysterious entity to hire a full-time Arts Research Development Officer, Nadé Nixon, who is responsible for assisting mysterious entity in expanding audiences, securing funding, and developing new marketing initiatives.  The Market Hall has also invested in this venture supplying rehearsal and office space. Due to this support we are poised to take a leadership role in theatre development within the community.

Background

The company was founded in 2000. Over the past eight years mysterious entity’s productions and professional development projects demonstrate the importance of the arts sector in building healthy communities. mysterious entity presents socially and culturally significant work exploring relevant issues in our community.  In doing so, the company has successfully forged meaningful and lasting relationships with many new and established social/cultural sectors.  In order to continue to expand our audience base, mysterious entity presents popular theatre works as well as new and original works. mysterious entity is dedicated to creating work that appeals to youth, working in cooperation with Trent University and local high schools at times to present works that tie into curriculum.
