Summer Drama Camps

for children and youth

 


Market Hall Performing Arts Centre is proud to announce its ninth year of Children's Drama Day Camps. Once again Market Hall will give children the opportunity to explore their creative selves within an authentic theatre environment. This summer Market Hall will offer eight one-week drama camps.

Each drama camp will be held at Market Hall and will run from 9:00am to 4:00pm, from Monday to Friday. The week will be filled with a variety of dramatic and artistic activities. Each session will include preparation for a performance for family and friends on Friday afternoon.

The cost is $135.00/week per child ($145.00 after June 9th). Please ask us about family rates and subsidized spaces. (We may be able to suggest ways to make camp more affordable.)

Steps to Registration:

1.  Contact Jordan Lyall, Administrator, by e-mail or at (705) 749-1146 to reserve your spot.

2.  Get a registration form.  Forms can be downloaded from our website, or we will be happy to send one by mail, e-mail, or fax.

3.  Submit your registration forms and payment within 14 days of reserving your spot.

WEEK ONE:  July 7-11, 2008

 

Market Hall Idols! With Andrew Finlan

 

Ages 8 – 12

Using dramatic techniques such as movement, dance, script writing, monologues, clowning, improvisation and group dynamic games, this camp will explore the exciting theme of entertainment.  Whether you have dreamed of being in a musical, the host of your own variety show, or a stand up comedian, this camp is for you.  Come out and boost your confidence while making some friends along the way.

Andrew Finlan is currently a Curriculum consultant for the Peterborough Separate School Board.  He is a former drama teacher at Holy Cross Secondary School.  His teaching portfolio includes arts and new teacher mentoring. Andrew was a board representative for the highly successful Youth 4 Youth concert in support of the Youth Emergency Shelter.  He has directed and performed in many local productions.  This is Andrew's sixth year at Market Hall Drama Camps and we are happy to have him back!  

 

 WEEK TWO:  July 14-18, 2008

 

Microscopic Marvels with Andrew Bigg

 

Ages 6-11

What would it be like to be able to shrink down to the size of a mouse?  A Germ?  Even smaller?!  We will explore the drama of small in this integrated arts experience using drama, movement, mask, art and creative writing that will have something for everyone…even the smallest of us.

Andrew Bigg has taught Drama, Visual Arts, and English in the PCVS Integrated Arts Programme for 12 years.  He was an instructor for every year of the Interact Children's Summer Arts Experience in Peterborough before spending the last four summers at the King Street Arts Centre in Millbrook with their Summer Arts Camp.  Last year at the Market Hall he went "Behind the Curtain of Sleep," creating huge puppets and an Integrated Arts fairy tale, and looks forward to more great creative fun this summer.  

 

 

WEEK THREE:  July 21-25, 2008

 

Market Hall Live! with Andrew Finlan

 

Ages 12 and up

Have you ever wondered what it might be like to be a cast member on a comedy series like 'Saturday Night Live’ or ‘This Hour Has 22 Minutes’? This performance and comedy workshop will experience first hand the fast, furious and fun pace of creating outrageous characters, storylines and concepts for the purpose of a live show to be presented on Friday afternoon.  Participants will experience all aspects of creating a stage performance from script writing of monologues and sketch comedy to characterization through movement and music. Bring your imagination and be ready to take a risk in this supportive theatrical environment.

WEEK FOUR:  July 28 – August 1, 2008

 

One-Two Punch Art and Drama Camp with Jane & Luke Werger

 

Ages 7 – 13

Please note: an additional $15 fee for art supplies will be charged to this camp

 Mother and son team up to present an exciting camp that combines both drama and visual art. A week’s worth of lively drama activities and art creation will spark the imagination and ideas of the campers, build their confidence and cooperation, help to nurture their talents, and provide opportunities for fun and friendship. The culminating Friday show will highlight the wonderful art and stage work of the group.

Jane Werger is an experienced actor and director in community theatre and a drama teacher who has worked in both elementary and secondary school.  She throughly enjoyed leading last year's "Awesome August Drama Camp," and is happy to collaborate with her son Lucas this summer in One-Two Punch. 

Luke Werger is a Peterborough artist who majored in painting at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design and who works in oils at his King Street studio.  Like also has an active sports background and has worked with children as a summer camp counsellor and a basketball coach.  

 

WEEK FIVE:  August 4-8, 2008  (also offered August 25 - 29)

Shakin’ with Shannon Dance Camp, Shannon Stanlick

 

Ages 8 – 13  

This high energy fun-filled movin' and groovin' camp is packed with a variety of dynamic dance styles, along with creative games and activities.  An introduction to hip hop, jazz, tap, lyrical, swing and musical theatre will be included in this week.  We will end the week with a sizzling performance showcasing our new moves!

Shannon Stanlick is a Market Hall camp Alumni who has just finished her first year at Brock University.  Shannon is a member of the Brock University Dance Team, and has taught at Peterborough's Move N' Groove studio for many years.  The recipient of the dramatic arts award for 4 consecutive years at St. Peter's Secondary School, Shannon has also been involved in numerous local musical theatre productions.  Energetic, enthusiastic, and extremely talented, we are so pleased to welcome Shannon back for her fourth season at Market Hall. 

 

WEEK SIX:  August 11 – 15, 2008

Monologue Mayhem with Phil Oakley

 

Ages 12 and up

A fun high school primer for students considering entering an arts program, these workshops will help students who already have an interest in the Performing Arts build characters and create dramatic scenes through the use of monologues. Scene study workshops will look at the classics as well as modern pieces. There will be an audition training component as well as workshops on theories of stagecraft.  Please note that there will be some memorization required.

Phil Oakley is the Artistic Director of Heritage Pavillion Stage and a professional theatre artist who currently conducts drama and performance sessions at several local schools.  His exciting career involves him with many local companies such as 4th Line Theatre, New Stages, and Arbour Theatre, as well as out of town professional theatre companies including Ground Zero Productions, Young People's Theatre, and Blackwell Theatre Productions. 

 

WEEK SEVEN: August 18 – 22, 2008

The Dragon’s Pearl with Andrew Bigg

 

Ages 6 – 11

 “The Dragon’s Pearl” will look at the stories of dragons that have fascinated humans since earliest times.  Whether kidnapping princess and hoarding treasure in the West, or bringing luck and elemental power in the East, dragons have always been with us. Another integrated arts experience using story, drama, movement, mask, art and creative writing.
